Hiroyuki Sanada leads adaptation of beloved James Clavell novel
Shōgun is an historical drama miniseries co-created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. It is based on James Clavell's novel of the same name which released in 1975. Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune starred in the previous television adaptation which aired on NBC in 1980.
Justin Marks has contributed to projects like Top Gun: Maverick while Rachel Kondo is an O. Henry Award finalist for her short story "Girl of Few Seasons." Both Marks and Kondo also take on the role of executive producers for Shōgun, alongside Edward L. McDonnell, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca and Michaela Clavell. Noteworthy producers include lead star Hiroyuki Sanada and Eriko Miyagawa. The series is directed by Jonathan van Tulleken (who oversees the first two episodes), along with Charlotte Brändström, Hiromi Kamata and Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour.
Cosmo Jarvis portrays the role of Pilot Major John Blackthorne in the miniseries with Hiroyuki Sanada starring as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. The additional cast includes Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba No Kata, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Ako as Daiyoin Lady Iyo, Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Buntaro, Yasunari Takeshima as Muraji, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Toshi Toda as Sugiyama, Hiro Kanagawa as Igurashi and Néstor Carbonell as Vasco Rodrigues. Shōgun was released on Hulu on February 27, 2024.
