Small Things Like These (2024)

Stating the obvious here, but Cillian Murphy is really great at acting, isn't he? While he obviously shines in bigger, more showy roles like Oppenheimer and in Peaky Blinders, Murphy brings a disquieting and uneasy edge to his role as Bill Furlong in Small Things Like These. It's a brisk and bleak drama that grips you in and doesn't let you go until long after the credits roll, and much of that emotional weight comes from Murphy's impeccable performance. If you're into gritty British dramas like Tyrannosaur, or the work of Ken Loach, this'll be right up your street.

The harrowing truths uncovered by this haunting character study are no small thing. Covering similar territory to 2002's The Magdalene Sisters, Small Things Like These is a slow-burn drama that speaks to one of Ireland's most painful chapters. A devastating watch at times, yes, this isn't an easy film to recommend, but it is a vital one. Still, there's beauty to be found in this story of courage confronting darkness. It's also set over the Christmas period, although I wouldn't recommend it for a festive family watch, no matter how good it might be.
