JA Bayona brings the story of the 1972 Andes plane crash survivors to life for Netflix
Society of the Snow (original title La Sociedad de la Nieve) is a survival drama film produced by Netflix. The film is based on Pablo Vierci’s novel The Snow Society: The Definitive of the World's Greatest Survival Story, which documents the true stories of the engers, including an Uruguayan rugby team, who survived a devastating plane crash in the Andes in 1972, resorting to extreme lengths to make it through the winter. The film is directed by Spanish filmmaker JA Bayona, whose previous works include The Impossible. Bayona writes the screenplay for the film alongside Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego. It is Bayona’s first Spanish language film in 14 years.
Society of the Snow features an ensemble cast who portray the survivors. The cast includes Agustín Pardella, Matías Recalt, Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Tomas Wolf, Esteban Kukuriczka, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Francisco Romero, Felipe González Otaño, Rafael Federman, Valentino Alonso, Agustín Della Corte, Simón Hempe, Jerónimo Bosia, Fernando Contigiani García, and Benjamín Segura.
